* In the old movie, "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea," what is fundamentally wrong with that title?

  • No hypen between "twenty" and "thousand."
  • It is impossible for an ocean on Earth to be that deep.
  • It does not describe whether it's a baseball, football or rugby league.
  • If it took place "under the sea," instead of submarines they would've had to use boring machines.
  • The "the" is gramatically incorrect.

  • profileMasta T Well, actually it was a novel before it was a movie, and the novel was originally in french. Guess that explains the translation confusion. The 20,000 Leagues refers to the length of the journey. The distance is about 3 times around the earth.
  • profile I have six dollars
  • profile Todd R.
  • profile Todd R. Correct about the confusion with regard to distance and depth. However there is an implication in that title, I guess, that the submarine and the journey, etc, was taking place "20,000 leagues under the sea," at the depth of 20,000 leagues. It used to mean a distance a person or horse could travel in an hour. ??

  • profile booda Hans "QOD Spelling Police Alert! Skanton has lost his boring hypen!" Brinker here in the Netherlands. Surprised that old Jules Verne would have made a movie with that mistake in its title.
  • profile Critters But it's a catchier title than "20,000 Leagues Traveled Under the Sea"
  • profile Mr K. I think they drove around for 20K Leagues trying to see what all was on the bottom

I thought you were right CJ, (funny!) so I went looking for a good quote and found this:
Lorraine Baines: Anyway, your Grandpa hit him with the car, and brought him into the house. He seemed so helpless, like a little lost puppy. And my heart just went out to him.
Linda McFly: Yeah, Mom, we know. You've told us this story a million times. You felt sorry for him, so you decided to go with him to the Fish Under the Sea dance.
Lorraine Baines: No, no, it was the Enchantment Under the Sea dance.

  • profile northwestphreak I'm not sure why Skanton is laughing in the explanation, especially given that his answer is wrong (as has been pointed out by several people).
  • profile Skanton The answer is not wrong, booba breath of the north. It is based on the popular premise of the movie/book title refering to "beneath" rather than length. Now, go back to your gummie bears, feces brain.
  • profile Bugget
  • profile Bugget very interesting.. I'll bet it was meant to describe great depth and that the writer did not know what a "league" was.
